Survey Analysis

In order to gain an understanding of our audience preferences and what would be most effective for a slasher film, we decided to create a questionnaire and advertised it on social media; we received 32 responses over the course of a week.

In order to establish our target audience and therefore the basis of the majority of the responses to our questionnaire, our first three questions were based on our audience's                                         identity and their habits in relation to horror films.

Question 1:

The majority (62.50%) of the people who answered the questionnaire were 16-20 years old.

Question 2:
59.38% of the audience were female.

Question 3:

An overwhelming percentage (56.25%) people never watch horror films.

Question 4:

A marginally leading percentage of people voted that a disfigured face mask would be most effective for a villain, followed by a mask with a creepy design.

Question 5:

The results for this question do not differ significantly with 9 people voting for a handcrafted weapon, 8 people voting for a generic blade and 7 people voting for a long distance; however I think we will use a generic blade as our weapon as it easier for us to acquire.

Question 6:

Most people, 41.67%, found that the setting of a dark alleyway would be most frightening, followed by the domestic setting of a home; these two settings would work well for our storyline and would be accessible locations.

Question 7:

Overall the responses show that the most effective or believable traits in a victim would be that the victim is female, seemingly innocent, young (under 25) and intelligent/skilled.

Question 8:

Our audience found that an antisocial male antagonist who is over 25 would be most effective; however in terms of supernatural ability and how well dressed he is, all the votes were equal (41.67%), therefore we choose his traits to suit his character.

Question 9:

A leading percentage of people thought that the antagonist and protagonist should be acquaintances e.g. just meeting, living in the same neighbourhood, or go to the same school etc over having a close or no relationship.

Question 10:

As we were considering whether to subvert the codes and conventions of the slasher genre, we had to ask the audience if they would consider it effective and 75% agreed that subverting the conventions would make the film more interesting.

In response to the results of our survey we will:
  • Create several mask concept designs
  • Go location scouting to find the most suitable location with the right lighting and be an area appropriate to film, if in public
  • Start character profiling for our main characters- this will help us form an accurate image leading to casting actors and costume design/ concepts for the characters
