During both the pre-production and production process, it is essential to have the audience in mind. In regards to our idea, we must find an ideal and suitable group to target and appeal to as our audience. We are using our survey results to determine which groups would be ideal as our target audience. More survey results are analysed in this post.
Based on aspects of our film opening such as narrative and characters etc., we, as a group, have decided that our target audience will consist of:
Females
Ages 18 and over (according to film certifications)
Fans of Horror
According to our survey, most of the people who competed it were female, which reflects that before the film opening is complete, we have a predominantly female following. It would be in our favour to target a female audience also due to the subversion of conventions regarding the genders and sexualities of characters. The convention of a male killer will be subverted as we will have a female killer who is also sexualised, also the victim would be male rather than female. This will appeal to feminists or audiences that wish to see a less stereotypical portrayal of women and their sexuality within film.
We thought that to appeal to an audience aged 18 and over would be more appropriate due to the themes of sex and violence within the plot of our film opening. Many popular Slasher movies have a certification of 18 due to the use of graphic visual imagery, which is a convention that is reoccurring within our film opening. Additionally, the theme of sexual abuse is implied by the character of the antagonist, although we may not directly address this due to the actor being under the age of 18, so according to film certifications, we cannot share our film opening with an audience that is underage.
Most people that completed our survey claimed that they did not watch horror movies often. Less than 50% watched horror films between 1-10+ times on average, over a period of six months. This information tells us that the genre of horror did not appeal to most people that partook in our survey, however we decided that we should aim to appeal to fans of horror, as that is our chosen genre, and it is unlikely that the film opening will appeal to audiences that favour other genres.
