Editing Research

During post-production, the software that we will be using to edit our footage will be Final Cut Pro X, which is also the program that was used to edit our Preliminary Task. As our film opening is categorised as a Slasher/Horror, we must consider this during the post production process in order to ensure that the final piece will be effective and meet expectations of a horror film opening, by using editing and post-production effectively.
Use of editing and post-production skills is required to ensure that our product is having the desired effect. Within our research, it has been established that post production plays a key role in allowing media products to have their desired effect. This may be done through the use of sound (diegetic and non diegetic), and editing footage that we have in a variety of ways.

Ways in which editing has been used previously in existing horror products to create atmospheres of suspense and tension can be seen in the following example:

Scream

This sequence from the film's opening demonstrates the effect of post-production, specifically through the use of sound and cutting shots.
The non-diegetic audio is parallel to the visual image of what is occurring, which causes the audience to feel more tense. The sound is a very important feature of the sequence as whole due to its ability to create an intense atmosphere which has a great impact of the audience. Below, is a segment from the same sequence, however this time there is no sounds. In comparison the original sequence, this is not as effective in creating tension amongst the audience.

A series of straight cut shots can be seen, the pace of these shots demonstrates the panic felt by the character which in turn also causes the audience to empathise with her character whilst she is in a state of distress. This is done in many existing horror films as it builds up the pace of sequence which creates an adrenalin rush effect that builds tension. The straight cut editing accompanied by the added non-diegetic audio exaggerate and amplify the tense atmosphere.

There is a multitude of ways in which editing can be used other than the use of non-diegetic sound and straight cut editing. In many recent media products the use of Visual Effects (VFX) has been used increasingly, although some things may require particular equipment and level of skill. Despite this, we intend to create an ideal and effective horror film opening using FCPX and other resources we may have access to.
