Summary of Research

As a group we have decided that our film opening would be of the genre horror, as throughout the research stage we had been looking at Horrors for our individual deconstructions of film openings and we have established the many codes and conventions of horror - specifically Slashers.

Saarah:
Personally, I feel as if slasher is the most appropriate sub genre of horror to choose, not only because we have done a significantly greater amount of research on this sub genre, but also due to the nature of it. Additionally one of the most important aspects of production is budget and accessibility to resources that we will require such as location, and weather and this is the most ideal sub genre that we can choose in order to prevent our film opening from appearing rushed, and as a result tacky.

Rebecca:

Due to the ease of location finding and casting, filming a slasher is arguably the best choice of genre for us. In addition to having access to the necessary basics for a slasher, we can showcase our skill through mise en scene inexpensively. On a more personal level, the slasher genre is one of my favourites and I have a lot more ideas and knowledge on these films than those of a different genre.

Elaine:

We chose the genre of horror initially as it is one that interests all of us- particularly how the genre can reflect and make us question human action and morality. Therefore we chose the sub genre of slasher as it would be easier to film compared to other horror sub genres such as psychological and supernatural horrors, due to our lack of resources.

Pros and cons of each of the sub genres have already been discussed in Pros and Cons of Horror Sub Genres by Rebecca.

The pros of this genre are listed as:
  • Location - There is a large range of locations that we could be able to use that will be appropriate for the genre as they are usually set in an environment that may be considered to be familiar to an audience.
  • Casting - Usually a young cast is used in Slashers, which will be relatively easy for us as it would be more convenient to find an appropriate cast.
  • Budget - A relatively low budget can be used to produce an effective final piece. The special effects would not be as costly as they could be if we were to do a alternative sub genre (i.e. Sci-Fi Horror would require a much higher budget to allow it to appear convincing and effective)
Although there would be some complications, we as a group have decided that we would be more able to deal and resolve any issues that occur during production. For example, if we had to reshoot any footage it would be easier to do so, as there is no need for elaborate use of special effects (i.e. makeup)
